A hideaway for architecture lovers
The Modernist is located a few steps from the port, in the center of Faro. The sandy beaches are only 10 minutes away by car.
Hosts Angélique and Christophe de Oliveira, a French couple with a passion for architecture and design, fell in love with Faro’s heritage in 2016. They imagined The Modernist, a minimalist and intimate holiday apartment residence. They have also designed a complete guide leading guests to countless, unrevealed Modernist gems in town.
The Modernist is a former office of a shipping company, originally built in 1977 by famous Portuguese Modern architect Joel Santana. The building was transformed by the PAr architect’s office in Lisbon. The modernist style has been reinterpreted while retaining the original spirit of the building. With its geometrically patterned tiles integrated into the concrete facade, wide windows, and a flat roof, The Modernist is a typical example of modern Portuguese architecture.
The residence consists of 6 suites-apartments with an area of 40 to 45 sqm, each with a private balcony or terrace. The apartments showcase a 1970s vibe and minimalist design. The red color of the facade tiles is echoed by the linoleum floor and the reddish-brown wood used for furniture, window frames, and doors. The mint green of the kitchen unit and the golden brass elements complete the color palette. The design and materials all come from Portugal and mainly from the Algarve. The furniture, mirrors, lamps, door handles, and woolen blankets were made by local craftsmen, the chairs and emblematic textiles come from Portuguese companies steeped in tradition, the stone comes from the Algarve, and the green marble from the Alentejo region.
The Modernist offers access to a beautiful interior garden framed by white walls and a roof terrace with an outdoor shower for relaxing and sunbathing, while enjoying panoramic views of the marina and the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
