Tuve: Hotel in Hong Kong

Inspired by Swedish landscapes, Tuve is a timeless hotel that highlights materials in a minimalist style.

A calming sensory retreat

Located in the Tai Hang district, a stone’s throw from Victoria Park, and close to the lively Causeway Bay area, the Tuve hotel promises a unique Hong Kong experience.

Opened in 2015, the Tuve hotel, designed by local studio Design Systems, is inspired by Lake Tuve and Swedish landscapes, photographed in winter by the Danish Kim Holtermand. Devoid of signage and clad in black bronze, the facade sets the tone. The hotel lobby with its speckled lighting and brass reception counter offers a taste of the overarching hotel design, based on the “less is more” concept. The interiors feature raw materials, natural textures, and minimal furnishings, meticulously selected: oxidized metal doors, raw brass, grey flecked marble, textured concrete, oak wood, gold leaf, and wired glass. The whole harmonize perfectly to create an aesthetic that is both rough and minimalist.

Tuve consists of 66 generous rooms, with just 3 rooms per floor, linked by a network of stark-white corridors. Bedrooms are équipped with comfy beds with linen sheets, understated bedside tables, roughly-hewn marble stools, oxidized brass light switches, and nd cleverly-designed furniture, such as wooden boxes enclosing a minibar, a slimline desk, and a metal chair. Lighting plays an important role, revealing textures and enhance the materials’ natural beauty. The bathrooms with opaque glass partition letting in the light are covered in marble on the floor and on the walls, and are equipped with a walk-in shower and Le Labo toiletries.

On the ground floor, the Superhooman restaurant offers Italian-Japanese fusion cuisine for lunch and dinner. There is no breakfast. There are no common areas as well, in accordance with Tuve’s claim that it wants to be “timeless, placeless and genderless”.
