Jackalope, a destination in itself

The Jackalope hotel is located in Merricks North, on the top of a 27-acre vineyard hill in Willow Creek, on the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne.

Opened in 2017, Jackalope is young entrepreneur Louis Li’s, first project. The hotel was designed in collaboration with the Australian architecture firm Carr Design Group, and the Fabio Ongarato Design studio for the brand identity. Jackalope takes its name from the mythical antelope horned hare. The hotel’s monolithic substructure, clad in dark zinc, charred wood, and black metal, is a bold and contemporary interpretation of the region’s farm buildings and barns. The hotel harmoniously blends into its environment. Jackalope has a collection of art, objects, furniture, and installations created especially for the hotel by designers and artists from around the world.

Jackalope counts 46 rooms with black and grey dominating the interiors, and illuminated with gold, silver, bronze and copper accents. Each room has large floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto a balcony with a view of the vineyard. The bathrooms are fitted with black Japanese bathtubs, rain showers, and local Hunter Lab toiletries.

The hotel has two restaurants under the direction of Chef Guy Stanaway. Doot Doot, with its 10,000-bulb ceiling, offers a gourmet tasting menu based on local products. Rare Hare designed by Projects of Imagination, serves wine in a relaxed atmosphere. The hotel bar, Flaggerdoot, is inspired by the alchemical distillation process. Outside, a 30-meter long black infinity pool overlooks the vineyard. A geode-like pavilion houses the wellness area.
