Monte Abastura: House in Castro Marim

Monte Abastura is set on a hill, surrounded by olive fields, in the countryside of Castro Marim, a beautiful and unspoiled region of the Eastern Algarve. Monte Abastura is just 15 minutes from the Ria Formosa, the ocean and the most beautiful beaches in the region.

Monte Abastura was born from Sophie and Jean-Noël’s passion for Portugal. The slow life, the craftsmanship, the heritage, the tranquility and the nature all appealed to them. In 2019, they discovered Monte Abastura, a ruin nestled in the heart of a 3-hectare private property, surrounded by the hills of the “Reserva Natural do Sapal”. The restoration work on this former sheepfold was completed in November 2021. The thick walls, the original design and the traditional Portuguese architecture have been preserved. Sophie and Jean-Noël now wish to share their story and their house.

The house can accommodate up to four people, ideal for two couples or a family with two children. The house is available for weekly rental from June to September. Monte Abastura consists of two comfortable bedrooms with king-size beds, two bathrooms with an Italian shower, a cosy living room with Bluetooth music speaker, and a fully equipped open kitchen.

Interiors feature a rustic, clean and minimalist aesthetic, combining the modern with the traditional. They are decorated with natural colors and materials (such as wood, stone and ceramics). The ceilings are covered with traditional cane, ensuring good ventilation of the house in summer. The green color, very present on country houses in Portugal, decorates the kitchen, the shutters and the front door. Materials and decoration have been carefully selected to create a unique and warm atmosphere, in keeping with Portuguese nature and style.

Outside, there are a south-facing local terracotta terrace, a dining area and a 10×5 meter heated swimming pool with sun loungers and with views of the surrounding countryside. The dining area with its shaded pergola is ideal for an aperitif at the end of the day or for long outdoor dinners. Here, everything invites calm and tranquility.

Monte Abastura is the perfect example of the incredible nature be found in southern Portugal, with the hinterland bordered by the ocean and salt marshes, the authentic rural territories, the little white houses, the songs of birds, fields of olive trees and century-old oaks. It’s the ideal place for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the silence.
