Hinterhouse: House in La Conception

Eco-conscious hideaway in the forest of Quebec

Hinterhouse is a house for rent since July 2020, nestled in a village called La Conception, in the dense forest of Mon-Tremblant valley in Quebec, Canada.

The contemporary cubic-shaped house was designed by the Ménard Dworkind Architecture & Design studio, for the Quebec brand Hintercompany, which plants 10 trees with each booking.

Hinterhouse is a prefabricated design and can be transported locally and delivered to different sites. The main structure of the house was built out of sustainably-forested native wood. The exterior is clad with custom-milled white cedar boards to withstand weather over time, age gracefully, blend in with its natural setting. Cedar is also used for sliding shutters, which control light access and privacy within. Despite the houses humble size, the interiors feel spacious and welcoming, cleverly planned, in a minimalist style, to maximise space and functionality. There is open-plan living space with a lounge and its wood stove, a kitchen with a central island compartmentalised to include a herb garden, a dining room and a wood terrace. A corridor runs alongside leading to the two bedrooms, the shower room covered in pale wood and white mosaic tile, and the utility room. Polished concrete flooring runs throughout the house, red pine planks that are oiled white cover interior walls and ebony-stained Douglas fir plywood clad the central volume. In all the rooms large floor to ceilling glazing windows invite the surrounding landscape inside, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior space. Outside, a winding staircase embedded within the side of the hill leads down to a Scandinavian-inspired sauna, outdoor shower and hammock for relaxing.

Hinterhouse is a retreat to provide an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, providing its guests with an opportunity to strengthen their connection with nature.
