Esperinos: House in Athens

A house laid out like a design gallery

Esperinos is a house for rent located on the Filopappou hill, in a peaceful area of Athens.

The abandoned 1930s house was transformed and renovated in 2020 by self-taught Greek artist-designer Stamos Michael, Athens based. The one-storey house is a hybrid space serving as accommodation but also as a design gallery. The concept aims to propose a new way of experiencing the cultural universe of Athens during a short trip. For construction, the stone house structure was retained, but new plans involved removing the existing partitions to open up the space, and adding new windows to bring in more natural light. The facade features light blue paint and a black steel gate. The house consists of a living space on the ground floor with a living room, a fitted kitchen, a dining area, and a bathroom with a shower. A staircase leads to the double bedroom on the mezzanine with exposed raw wood beams. There is also an outdoor area furnished with lush plants, and tables and chairs, at the rear of the house. The Interiors feature warm colors and white shades reminiscent of cycladic settlements, concrete floors contrasted by terracotta tiles, walls finished in sleek shades of green and burgundy with cutouts in the plaster to reveal the rough stone structure of the building. Esperinos showcases a selection of objects and furniture, a combination of Michael’s designs, works from homegrown artists and iconic contemporary design items, spread throughout every room of the house. A personalized music playlist and a selection of products from local organic markets and vineyards are available to guests. Esperinos house hosts an ever evolving collection of art and design works, as well as a program of in-house art events that run through the year in collaboration with Grace, a local independent art foundation.

Esperinos is a calm space to stay and experience the Greek capital within interiors mimicking those of a museum.
