Casa Um is a vacation rental home nestled among orange groves in the countryside about a 15-minute drive from the town of Tavira on the Portuguese Algarve coast.
Launched in by the concept of hospitality TheAddresses, Casa Um which means “first house”, was designed in collaboration with the Portuguese architectural firm Atelier Rua and by the design studio Studio Stories for interiors. The existing humble structure, a former shepherds’ farm, has been redesigned, enlarged, and transformed into a minimalist and modern house. With a surface area of 280 sqm spread over two levels, the house can accommodate up to 8 people. The common areas, the living room with its fireplace, the dining room, and the modern fully equipped kitchen are situated on the upper floor. The four newly constructed bedrooms, bathrooms and private patios occupy a cluster of interconnected cubic volumes on the lower level. There is also an interior patio that houses an old bread oven, terraces, a garden, and a swimming pool with stunning views over the rolling hills, to the Atlantic Ocean. Harmoniously blending old and new elements, the house displays a traditional white-painted wooden roof that blends in with the whitewashed walls, concrete floors, and arched doorways that echo the farmhouse’s past. Large new windows provide generous views and abundant natural light. The minimalist and uncluttered spaces, decorated in a palette of muted earthy hues, are filled with modern furniture, handcrafted ceramics, and locally made textiles. A well-stocked wine cabinet offers Portugal’s best wines and local produce. To make the experience complete, a guide with tips and suggestions of places to visit and things to do is available to guests.
