Casa Tiny is a house for rent with its feet in the sand and its head in the trees, nestled in an area of dense vegetation, just a short walk from the sea, in the surfing town of Puerto Escondido, on the peaceful coasts of Oaxaca in Mexico.

Inspired by the simple life of Henry David Thoreau in his book “Walden”, the house was designed in 2017 by the young Mexican architect Aranza de Ariño for Claudio Sodi, the owner. As the name suggests, the house stands out for its small size. Casa Tiny is reached via a winding footpath. The compact, 26 sqm double-height house that can accommodate two people, above all offers tranquillity. The structure, gable roof, floors, staircase and furniture are all constructed of poured raw concrete. The concrete is perfect to regulate indoor temperature and reduce the presence of insects. The other main building material is the native parota wood, a dark honey coloured timber used for doors, windows, blinds, closets and shelves, that add rustic warmth. The house is oriented on a north-south axis to capture the prevailing winds, allowing natural cross ventilation, air circulation from one side to the other generated by the window of the room and the main entrance doors. The space, minimalist and contemporary, includes a kitchen equipped with a wood-burning oven and a 5,4 m island that extends outside, an open mezzanine bedroom with a double bed and two lamps, a bathroom and a toilet which is the only closed room of the house. The exterior feature a terrace with a concrete dining table, a comfortable hammock inviting you to enjoy the outdoors, a small swimming pool for cooling down, a vegetable garden, and a path that leads to the beach.
