Barefoot Luxury is a complex of luxury villas for rent, located on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde.

Completed in 2019, the villas were designed by the Antwerp studios Polo Architects and Going East to be entirely “trompe-l’oeil”. The complex consists of 12 villas (30 in total planned thereafter) named Les Esculturas, nestled against the rocky hillsides of Baia de João d’Evora, a secluded bay on Cape Verde’s São Vicente island. The villas have a raw concrete framework and basalt stone walls directly extracted from the surrounding valley (traditional Cabo-Verdian construction technique). Locally selected natural materials such as wood and brown lava stone, with earthy and brown tones, combine perfectly with earthy colors and soberly blend into the existing environment. A network of basalt stone roads has been traced to connect the different structures.

Each villa is therefore arranged around a central outdoor patio that comes complete with a pool and kitchen area. Large panels of kotibé wood that front the space can be pivoted to minimise the strong winds that typically blow through the region. Tall pergolas topped with strips of rattan provide shade to white daybeds and sun loungers. The interiors of the villas feature a contemporary style with textured concrete floors, ceilings, and walls, and full-height windows that open to the ocean. Warm-hued timber has also been used to craft cabinetry and to frame the full-height windows. A selection of furniture in natural tones, most made by local artisans, has been added, creating a warm atmosphere. Guests enjoy maximum exposure to the sweeping sea views and natural daylight. The interior spaces merge with the terrace through huge panoramic windows that collapse when opened.
