The Tiing: Hotel in Bali

On the peaceful North coast of Bali, Le Tiing is an architecturally unique hotel designed in bamboo and concrete.

Located on the remote North coast of Bali, in a wild region, The Tiing is a resort rooted in its local and cultural context.

Opened at the end of 2019, the hotel, surrounded by dense green jungle, was designed by Perth-based Australian architect Nic Brunsdon in cooperation with Indonesian studio Manguning. In order to use existing resources and take the tropical climate of the region into consideration, simple materials were chosen such as bamboo, which is very abundant in the region, and concrete, the most common building material on the island. These two materials blend harmoniously to create a series of smooth rendered walls and textured wooden screens. Bamboo has also been used as a formwork for cast concrete, giving it a ridged texture that blends with the natural surroundings. The Tiing consists of seven two-story blocks, separated by cobbled pathways. Between the blocks, these pathways framed by the textured concrete walls create tunnel-like views towards the trees, to the sea and mountains.

There are 14 suites in total, and each block contains two suites, one on the ground floor and another above. Each suite consists of a bedroom and a living space, located at opposite ends, and oriented with a different view. In the center of the suite, the round-shaped bathroom has a window on the ceiling which brings in daylight and offers a clear view of the sky. The rooms are comfortable and unadorned, in a minimalist style leaving room for the beauty of the landscape in the center of attention. All rooms have their own private swimming pool, overlooking the lush Bali landscape.
