Perched on the volcanic island of Santorini, on a hillside overlooking the sea, in the middle of the traditional village of Oia, the most famous on the scenic coast, stands the legendary Oia Castle.
The building was a former residence built towards the end of the 19th century. On the ground floor were an old wood-burning oven, a stable, small warehouses, and a rainwater cistern, while the main rooms of the residence were upstairs. The residence was renovated and transformed in 2018 into a serene sanctuary, a small boutique hotel, by Kapsimalis Architects, a local architectural firm. The original structure and interior spaces have been preserved. In order to integrate the hotel perfectly into the landscape, the architects used local volcanic stone on the pillars and fundamental walls, combined with charcoal wood frames, and light brown-gray plaster on the facades and floors. Olives trees, a palm tree at the entrance of the complex, lavenders, and thymes, resistant plants to the strong north winds, complement the integration of the synthesis into its environment. The access to the building is via a main stepped path that connects the old Castle with Ammoudi, its old harbor.
The complex consists of only 5 bedrooms, three of which are on the ground floor which are old cave houses, and two more on the first floor. Each has an independent entrance, a lounge area, a sleeping area, a dressing room, an open bathroom, a terrace with a jacuzzi or a private outdoor swimming pool. Sleek interiors feature handcrafted furniture, a few designer lamps, and a warm color palette. All rooms enjoy breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the beautiful Santorini sunset. At the top of the building is a common lounge to sit and where breakfast is served. There is also an infinity pool.
