Kisawa Sanctuary: Hotel on Benguerra Island

Kisawa Sanctuary on Mozambique’s Benguerra Island mixes new technology with more ancient forms of manufacturing.

Book Kisawa Sanctuary

An ultra luxury retreat

Opened in May 2021, the Kisawa Sanctuary hotel, nestled on the island of Benguerra in southern Mozambique, straddles five kilometers of unspoiled coastline of white sand whose waters are teeming with humpback whales, dugongs, rays, dolphins, turtles, and whale sharks. Created by the Swiss entrepreneur, creative director, and businesswoman Nina Flohr, the estate is a welcoming place whose mission is to create a bond between people and place; where luxury is defined by freedom and the generosity of thoughtful choices.

Spread over 300 hectares of sand and forest, the very exclusive and unspoiled area houses 22 custom-made bungalows spread over 12 residences as well as the Kisawa residence. The bungalows are either installed in a sheltered cove, or placed in the dunes, overlooking the endless ocean. They are built with local materials, uniquely furnished, dressed in various elements including African crafts, and decorated in individual color combinations. Parts of the bungalows and furniture have been 3D printed from sand and seawater mortar. Each has one or more bedrooms, a generous bathroom, a lounge area, an outdoor kitchen, an infinity pool private, an enveloping terrace, its own seafront, and excellent services. Each bungalow offers maximum privacy and an optimal appreciation of the natural environment.

At the heart of the sanctuary, guests benefit from common areas dedicated to catering, relaxation, and well-being. The hotel has several restaurants including Cove Mussassa, Barraca, Pizza Tuk Tuk, and Robata, serving dishes made with garden vegetables and organic produce. There is also a lagoon-style infinity pool, a beach bar, a library, a freestanding spa with architecture inspired by thatched-roof village houses, a clay tennis court, and a diving center.

The first luxury hotel to be 3D printed, this is an ideal place for a weekend getaway or a long rewarding vacation, perfect for relaxing.
