Less than an hour’s drive from Reykjavik, in Selfoss, next to the dormant volcano Mount Hengill and the Nesjavellir geothermal complex, surrounded by hot springs, the Ion Adventure hotel offers an unforgettable experience.

The Ion Adventure is the place where modern design meets Iceland’s breathtaking natural landscapes. Initially, an abandoned building was used as accommodation for the staff from the nearby geothermal power plant. After a two-year renovation, the Ion Luxury Adventure opened its doors in 2013. Sigurlaug Sverrisdottir, the owner of the premises, partnered with the Santa Monica-based Minarc studio to integrate innovative design into her vision of adventure and well-being. Isolated in the middle of a lava field, the Ion, with its black and concrete exterior, stands proudly atop a series of elevated pillars.

The 45 rooms with their minimalist and contemporary decor feature concrete walls, wooden floors, large bay windows, and wooden furniture designed from recycled materials. Each room is decorated with a subtle color palette and an array of murals of Icelandic horses. Each room has a private bathroom with a rain shower and Icelandic cosmetics.

The Northern Lights bar and lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, provides a sense of harmony between the indoors and outdoors, and offers a breathtaking panoramic view. The Silfra restaurant offers simple, fresh, and seasonal Nordic cuisine. Located just underneath the bar, the Lava Spa and the 10-meter outdoor thermal hot water swimming pool provide ultimate relaxation.
