Book Breac.House

Customized hospitality and modern luxury

Breac.House is a retreat on the edge of Ireland, on the northwest coast of Donegal, perched on a hill at Horn Head, overlooking Sheephaven Bay and the village of Dunfanaghy.

Coming from Dublin, Breac.House was born from Cathrine and Niall’s dream. Originally the house was a detached cottage from the 1980s. For the project’s design they commissioned the local firm MacGabhann Architects, and Irish designers and manufacturers.

Opened in 2017, the house, with its contemporary design, blends perfectly into the Donegal landscape. The black-stained larch cladding and sloping slate roof inspired by Muckish Mountain allow the house to blend in perfectly with the surrounding rocky moorland. The interiors are simple and monochrome. High ceilings and large bay windows frame a panoramic view of the landscape. The floors are made of oak hardwood flooring and slabs of Ardara quartzite. Everywhere in the house you will find the work of local designers; Eddie Doherty (tweed throws and cushions), The Veneerist (carved wooden toothbrush holder), McNutt of Donegal (Irish linen towels), Atlantic Equipment (waxed backpacks), Superfolk (seaweed block prints), Tricia Harris (solid oak furniture), Simon O’Driscoll (oak sofa), Muck ‘n’ Muffins (ceramics)… Breac. House has 4 cosy rooms with a private terrace. The bathrooms are equipped with seaweed soap made by a local soap maker.

Breakfast that is conjured up with local ingredients is delivered to the rooms through a trapdoor. There are several areas to relax; in the library, by the fire in the living room, in the garden, in the outdoor Koto sauna by the wood fire, or in a revitalizing seaweed bath. You can borrow boots, bicycles, and backpacks filled with picnic foods, to go exploring the area.

Breac.House is a unique destination for architecture, design, and nature lovers.
