A timeless place, harmoniously linking the past to the present

Bode Country House is nestled at the foot of the historic Monsanto Village. Situated in the rolling countryside of Beira Baixa in Portugal, just 25 km from the Spanish border, the ancient village of Monsanto rises above a valley on the side of a steep hill. Here, narrow cobblestone streets are carved into the rocky landscape and houses are squeezed on, between and under huge granite boulders.

The name Bode, or goat in English, was chosen in keeping with the original name of the property, as this animal perfectly encapsulates the character and spirit of this region of Portugal.

Bode offers a symbiosis of old and new in perfect harmony, blending the existing traditional stone buildings once used as a wine and olive press, with modern architecture. Bode is synonymous with subtle elegance, freedom and tranquility.

Bode consists of 8 bedrooms (4 on the ground floor with a terrace and 4 more on the first floor) and a separate two-bedroom cottage, designed simply but elegantly with high ceilings and a neat interior. Each offers stunning views of the magnificent mountains and countryside.

The interior design is inspired by the Japanese philosophy of “Wabi-Sabi” which aims to appreciate the beauty of a naturally imperfect world. To add warmth and a personal touch, the owners used their eclectic collection of furniture and accessories for some of the interior design.

In the heart of the building, the Bistrot serves simple and modern Mediterranean and Portuguese dishes. The menu, which changes frequently, focuses on the best produce each season has to offer, emphasising local and organic produce.

A swimming pool in the rocks and patios shaded by pergolas offers ideal spaces for relaxation and contemplation.

Bode organizes several activities for its guests: nature walks, trekking, paddle boarding, mountain biking, bird watching, mushroom and olive picking.
